Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for gold room operation
   • Access, interpret and apply documentation and procedures for conducting gold room operations and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Receive, interpret and clarify shift changeover details
   • Communicate job requirements with other personnel
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Select appropriate type of auxiliary equipment for work activities
   • Perform equipment pre-start checks
   • Identify, address and report potential risks and hazards
   • Identify, address and report environmental issues
   • Adhere to emergency procedures
   • Use dust suppression and extraction methods
   • Ensure area is well ventilated
2. Start-up equipment in sequence
   • Carry out start-up procedures and complete start-up checks according to plant configurations and system requirements
   • Confirm plant is operational
3. Operate and monitor smelting equipment
   • Read and interpret data from equipment indicators
   • Continuously inspect operations/plant and containment areas for defects and potential problems
   • Read and interpret analysis reports
   • Add reagents according to site procedures
   • Adjust equipment to operating parameters
   • Observe and follow electrical and/or gas safety techniques
   • Carry out operator level maintenance
   • Complete all required documentation
   • Pass on end of shift information verbally or in writing to incoming shift
   • Adhere to site security procedures
4. Prepare electrowinning products for smelting
   • Treat stripping products in preparation for smelting - fluxing and/or drying
   • Record all required information
5. Shutdown in sequence and/or isolate equipment
   • Shutdown or isolate equipment based on process and safety requirements
   • Perform post shutdown/isolation checks
6. Conduct housekeeping activities
   • Clear work area and dispose of, or recycle materials
   • Clean and maintain condition of equipment, ensure suitability for use, and address/report issues
   • Manage and/or report hazards, and maintain a safe working environment
   • Maintain records of gold room processes in accordance with site procedures

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of conducting gold room operations including:

identifying and managing hazards correctly

handling hazardous substances correctly

identifying and applying dust suppression and extraction methods

identifying and managing ventilation systems

demonstrates completion of conducting gold room operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

performing start up in sequence on equipment to meet job requirements

operating and monitoring smelting equipment to meet job requirements

reading equipment indicators

adjusting equipment to maintain optimum output

preparing electrowinning products for smelting

shutting down and/or isolating the equipment in sequence

performing routines checks on equipment

maintaining required documentation and records
